" shyness has a strange element of narcissism, a belief that how we look, how we perform, is truly important to other people. "

I agree. no..I strongly agree. never understood why that's a better response to bubble in on stuff..it's tedious. anyways, a small ounce of narcissism could just be called confidence right? I think once it becomes apparent to any waitress or mailman or cashier that you are self-absorbed it becomes narcissism. confidence means having faith in yourself and your abilities, potential, etc. truly secure and confident people don't feel a need to throw their greatness in the spotlight. the greatness gets thrown in the spotlight when appropriate, without help from the owner. it's those who need to challenge the natural spotlights who can brand themselves "narcissistic". I have a friend who is extremely narcissistic. it drives me insane how said friend believes that each quality surpasses the rest of humanity as we know it. to be honest, it's quite hilarious. it's only not hilarious when the narcissist realizes no real relationships exist. punishment fits the crime.
I know, I laughed out loud. or as my favorite comedian, demetri martin, would say: lqtm.
moral of the story: never mistake being confident for being self-absorbed. how can you spot the difference? you have true relationships with one, inconsistent ones with the other. bam.
